Our Campus and Classrooms
- Our Campus
The German-American International School occupies 5.6 acres, with one permanent building (approx. 13,000 square feet) and several portable buildings (approx. 25,000 square feet) in Menlo Park, California. Together they comprise facilities typical of an elementary or “middle” school in California. The school property is leased from the Menlo Park-Las Lomitas School District.
The youngest children attend classes in the main building only. Upper grades and special study/tutorial classes are housed in the portables.
Additional facilities include tennis courts, a baseball diamond, a grass area for other sports such as soccer, basketball courts, a volleyball court, a play structure, a blacktop play area, and an extensive preschool outdoor area.
The preschool classrooms are spacious and allow children to be creative and to relax after doing arts and crafts, playing, singing, and exercising.

GAIS is one of only a few local schools boasting a gymnasium for indoor P.E. lessons. The gym is also used for general assemblies, school events, and parties.
LibrarySince its move to a new building, the library has become one of the favorite places for our students and parents to be on campus. It is spacious, bright and cozy, with large colorful sofa cushions to relax on while reading an interesting book from our large collection which encompass over 11,000 books, CDs, DVDs, and videos. The collection of German titles is currently in the process of being expended. There are also computers for students to access programs for taking book quizzes and other reading-related activities. Besides books in both German and English, our library has a broad collection of German and English audio tapes, CDs, videos, and DVDs. We now also have a special shelf with children and adult books for sale in English and German. For opening hours please click here.
In recognizing the importance of technology, and the need for students to develop a good understanding of technology and the use of the computer as an educational tool, GAIS has developed a good campus-wide IT infrastructure. In addition to a fully equipped and modern computer lab, each classroom has a computer corner and the library has additional work stations for student use. The school-wide IT goals are:
- To provide the students with the skills needed to use computers as a tool for learning, research and communication.
- To provide students with modern facilities which fulfill our objectives.
- To develop students’ self confidence to tackle the familiar and unfamiliar.
- To encourage students’ autonomy in choosing applications to fulfill specific tasks.
- To instill the ability to analyze information from different media and present it in effective ways.
- To educate students about the social and moral implications of computers including the dangers associated with the Internet and data protection.
This play structure is only one of the many features of the extensive playgrounds that include tennis courts, basketball courts, a baseball diamond, a volleyball court, a grass area, a blacktop play area, and a beautiful preschool playground.
