Academics
GAIS is an authorized IB World School. We implement the International Baccalaureate program through the Preschool, the Elementary School, and the Middle School. The GAIS curriculum is specifically designed by the school to support the GAIS mission statement and provide a continuum of learning through the three sections.  It combines relevant standards from the International Baccalaureate Organization, California and German speaking countries

Preschool

The Preschool has five class groups. Three of the groups are five-day programs and two class groups are split between two- and three day-programs. The Preschool is designed as an immersion program in the German language. Students can enter the program with little or no knowledge of German. The Preschool follows the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Program.

Elementary School

The Elementary School encompasses Kindergarten (called Vorschule in Germany) through Grade 5. The Kindergarten (Vorschule) is a full immersion program in the German language. Grades 1 to 5 are bilingual, with approximately 75 percent of the curriculum taught in German and 25 percent taught in English. The Elementary School follows the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Program (PYP).

International Middle School

The International Middle School encompasses Grades 6 to 8. We follow the IB Middle Years Program (MYP), and anticipate full authorization of this program on schedule in 2012. The program of study is designed to allow students easy transition to American high schools, German Gymnasiums or international schools world-wide.

The middle school curriculum includes a set of required courses in English, and then additional courses offered in German or in English, plus either French or Spanish as a third language. There is more detail on the middle school program of study here.
